Title: Medal Comments: William Blades (1869) describes the reverse of this coin as ‘Haarlem, 1740. The great Marshoorn. A printing-press against one end of which rests a shield bearing the Arms of the city of Haarlem: at the other end is an open book “Spiegel onser behoudenise 1440,” the earliest book printed by Coster. To the left in bold letters, TYP. INV. 1428. Near the press is a shield bearing a dove, the device of Coster. At foot in a cartoon is the engraver’s name, G. Marshoorn, and in the Exergue is the date 1740. The whole is surrounded by three serpents forming a circle, each holding the tail of another in its mouth.’ Number: 2G (illustration page 210, description page 27-28). Christian Friedrich Gessner (1740) shows an illustration in volume 4, Table 1, number I. A description can be found in volume 3, page 480. Gerrit Marshoorn, geboren in 1703, overleden in 1752, was goudsmid en stempelsnijder te Haarlem. [see note on page 41.] The Dutch Rijksmuseum has an etching/gravure by Jan Wandelaar, dated 1740.
