Comments:

William Blades (1869) describes the reverse of this coin as ‘A printing-press, on the head of which is a shield bearing the Arms of the city of Haarlem, and upon the “winter” or cross piece, through which the screw works, a shield bearing a dove, the device of Coster. Against the press leans an open volume, upon which appears: SPE SAL CUL- VATI HUMA ONIS. (Speculum humani salvationis) the title of one of the earliest books attributed by Dutch Bibliographers to the press of Coster. The legend is: INV. 1428. PERVULG. 1440. III JUB. 1740. In the Exergue: TYPOGRAPHIA HARLEMI G.M.’ Number: 2H (illustration page 200, description page 28).

Christian Friedrich Gessner (1740) shows an illustration in volume 4, Table 1, number II. A description can be found in volume 3, page 480-481.

Gerrit Marshoorn, geboren in 1703, overleden in 1752, was goudsmid en stempelsnijder te Haarlem. [see note on page 41.]

The Dutch Rijksmuseum has an etching/gravure by Jan Wandelaar, dated 1740. It is not clear which book contains this page.
