Jan Amos Komenský: ‘Orbis Sensualium Pictus: Hoc est, omnium fundamentalium in mundo rerum, & in vita actionum, Pictura & Nomenclatura.’ 1658 - 1700
The first edition of this book was printed in 1658 in Nuremberg (Germany) (= Noribergae or Norimbergae). According to the 1967 bibliography of Kurt Pilz, 245 editions were published of which fifty-five appeared before 1701. Below are the scans of twenty-five editions showing eight different illustrations of a printing press. The numbering in the captions below refers to Pilz’s bibliography. It is clear that several editions use the same gravures and woodcuts, but more detailed comparisons are necessary to investigate this. [I’m still looking for scans of the remaining 20 editions.]
